The Volgograd State Academy of physical education founded in 1960 is situated on the bank of the great Russian river Volga. During 45 years the Academy had gone a large journey. It played an important role in the Olympic Movement development, physical education and sports in Russia.

It trained more than 20 000 teachers of physical education and sport coaches. The Olympic champions, world record-holders: Sadovyi, Popov, Pankratov, Selkov, Bondarenko, Romanova, Opalev, Lebedeva, Isinbayeva, Slesarenko, the outstanding coaches of modern times: Avdienko (swimming), Ackopyan (handball), Dogonkin (athletics), Trophymov (athletics), Gorckov (athletics) and others are among the students and graduates of the Academy.

Nowadays the Academy is a large educational center including five departments: they are preparatory, physical education, physical training and sports and correspondence departments, the advanced professional skill department and master‘s degree courses, post-graduate courses.

2000 students, foreign citizens included, study at the Academy.

This Higher School trains specialists in:

- physical education (bachelor - 4 years, master - 6 years) and Physical training and sports (specialist - 5 years) in specialities: track - and - field, swimming, weightlifting, canoeing, rhythmic gymnastics, gymnastics, sports producers, sport dance, health technologies soccer, basketball, volley-ball, boxing, tumbling, aerobics, educational sport;

- physical training for persons with health problems (specialist - 5 years); adaptive physical training, remedial gymnastics;

- management of organization (specialist - 5 years); management in sports, hotel and tourism business;

- pedagogics and psychology (specialist - 5 years).

There is a preparatory department for foreign citizens at the preparatory faculty. Graduates with specialist or master diploma may continue their studies at the post-graduate courses (3 years).

There are 9 sports-pedagogical chairs, 6 socio-humanitarian and 3 medico-biological chairs. Highly qualified specialists (12 academicians and corresponding members of the academies of different spheres, more than 124 lecturers with higher degrees, 31 doctors of sciences and professors included, teach anatomy, physiology, sports medicine, hygiene, pedagogics and psychology, theory and methods of physical education and sports, economy, sociology, sports management, Olympic education, history and other subjects.

The Academy has a modern educational and sports base. There is a stadium with synthetic covering, an indoor soccer and track-and-field stadium, gyms, and sports games halls, a swimming-pool, studying laboratories, lecture halls.

VSAPC closely collaborates with Russian institutions of physical culture, Teachers’ Training University, Volgograd school of Olympic reserve, sports clubs “Rotor”, “Caustik”, “Lukoil-Spartacus”, Teachers’ Training college in Mikhailovka, institutes in CIS and abroad: Kharckov and Dnepropetrovsk institutes of physical education, American Biographical Institute, etc.
